Sardines are a seasonal fish. They fatten through spring plankton blooms, peak in summer, and lean out again — and because traditional canneries pack fish caught hours earlier, every great tin carries its season inside it. This page tracks the world's sardine seasons through the year.

🟢 In season right now (July): Atlantic Iberia (Portugal & Galicia) is at absolute peak — this is festival season and the fattest fish of the year. Brittany and the Mediterranean are in full season. Tins packed this month are the ones collectors will chase later.

Why the season is in your tin

Industrial canning smooths seasons away with frozen fish. Traditional canneries — the ones that dominate our rankings — don't: they pack fresh fish in season, and simply pack less (or other species) the rest of the year. A summer-packed Portuguese tin holds fish at maximum fat, which means deeper flavor and more omega-3s. This is why French and Portuguese houses date tins like wine, and why conserveira culture treats a good vintage as cellar-worthy.

Frequently asked questions

When is sardine season in Portugal?

Roughly May through October, peaking in midsummer when the fish are fattest — which is why the Festa de Santo António in mid-June is one giant sardine barbecue.

Does season matter for canned sardines?

Enormously. Traditional canneries pack fresh fish caught hours earlier, so a tin carries the season it was packed in. Peak-season fish have more fat — richer flavor and more omega-3s.

Why do some tins show a year?

Vintage-dated tins ('millesimee' in France) are packed at seasonal peak and meant to be aged like wine. Collectors trade them by year.
