Sardines answer with something a salmon fillet structurally cannot: the whole fish. This is where the fish diverge. Sardines are, for practical purposes, all wild-caught — there's no sardine-farming industry to worry about. Most affordable salmon, by contrast, is farmed Atlantic, which comes with real debates: feed-conversion ratios, sea-lice pressure on wild stocks, and localized effluent around pens — set against genuine defenses like steadily improving practices and an omega-3 profile that holds up. Wild Alaskan salmon sidesteps most of that with well-managed fisheries, but you pay for it at the counter.
Sardines skip the entire dilemma: small, fast-growing, low on the food chain, and among the lowest-carbon animal proteins there are. The gap most guides skip. A tin of sardines is shelf-stable, needs zero cooking, and runs about $1.50–4 a serving; salmon is roughly $4–12, and fresh fillets need cooking and timing. That matters, because the standard health advice — "eat oily fish a couple of times a week" — mostly fails on cost and friction. Sardines are how that advice actually happens for most people: a tin, a fork, done.
Round 5 — Taste & kitchen
