Notable facts

Origin

Isabel traces back to 1887 in Elantxobe, a small fishing village on Spain's Biscay coast, and grew into one of Spain's best-known seafood-canning names under Grupo Garavilla. The Ecuador operation is a later manufacturing outpost of that same group: a dedicated plant in Manta, on Ecuador's Pacific coast, canning both tuna and sardines for domestic and export markets under the same Isabel name.

In 2015, Italy's Bolton Group — already a major shareholder in rival Spanish canner Grupo Calvo — agreed to acquire a controlling majority stake in Grupo Conservas Garavilla, a deal significant enough to draw antitrust scrutiny given Bolton's simultaneous position in two of Spain's top canned-fish producers. The founding Garavilla family retained day-to-day leadership through the transition. Isabel's Manta plant continues to operate as part of that larger, Bolton-linked group structure today.
