Origin

Real Conservera Española traces its roots to 1920, when the Peña family — one of the founding canning families of Cambados, in Galicia's Rías Baixas — began preserving shellfish and, eventually, fish at home with basic equipment. In 2011 the business, previously known as Conservas Peña, was restructured and relaunched as Real Conservera Española, repositioning around gourmet quality and earning the right to use the Spanish Royal Seal in its branding.

The cannery has built its reputation on xouba, a small Galician sardine sold in several olive-oil formats — plain, lemon-finished, spicy, and limited-edition runs of the smallest catch — sourced exclusively, in season, from local rías. The company has publicly flagged that warming estuary waters are making xouba catches less reliable over time.
