About the fish
- Widely distributed in warm and temperate waters on both sides of the Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean.
- A pelagic schooling species commonly around 25 cm and reaching roughly 30-40 cm in length.
- A true sardine of the genus Sardinella, but in the EU it must be sold under a qualifying name rather than the unqualified term 'sardines'.
- An important target of small pelagic fisheries off northwest Africa and in the Mediterranean.
